Jeff Sessions has been sworn in as attorney general, using his short inaugural speech to vow to end "lawlessness" and combat what he sees as a rise in crime.
Mr Sessions, 70, is one of Mr Trump's most controversial cabinet appointees, owing to his hardline conservative views and accusations of racism - which he vehemently denies.
His appointment to head the justice department comes at a turbulent time, with Mr Trump's Supreme Court nominee viewing the president's actions regarding the courts as "demoralising and disheartening".
