The capital of Santa Catarina is the fourth city that hosts the most international events in Brazil, behind São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. The ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) published the 2017 ranking (referring to the events held in 2016) and the capital of Santa Catarina rose one position, compared to the previous year. ICCA publishes the destinations that host international events, having three editions or more and a minimum of 50 participants.
Florianópolis hosted 16 international events in 2016, six more than in the previous year. Among them are the 5th ISFHB (International Symposium on Fusarium Head Blight) and 2nd IWWB (International Workshop on Wheat Blast), JEWC (Junior Enterprise World Conference), and the 17th ICHA (International Conference on Harmful Algae) 2016.
According to the ranking, Brazil has fallen four positions in the overall standings and at the moment ranks 15th, with 244 international events in 2016. The top five finishers are the United States, Germany, England, France and Spain.
"The tourism sector is one of the most important sectors for the economy, generating jobs and consumption. Florianópolis continues to grow and stands out in the event market," comments Floripa Convention president Marco Aurélio Floriani.
